6-for-6 vs. the FBS???

This weekend of college football features six CAA teams taking on teams from the FBS, including Delaware at Navy on Saturday.  Here's the full list of games:

  • Villanova at Temple
  • New Hampshire at Toledo
  • James Madison at North Carolina
  • William & Mary at Virginia
  • Richmond at Duke
  • Delaware at Navy

TheFightinHens.com put up the challenge of ranking these matchups in order of potential CAA victory.  Each one has it's own ups and downs, so here's my ranking:

  1. Richmond at Duke
  2. William & Mary at Virginia
  3. New Hampshire at Toledo
  4. Villanova at Temple
  5. James Madison at North Carolina
  6. Delaware at Navy
Duke is the cake-walk of the ACC so I can't see Richmond losing in Durham.  William & Mary pulled the upset in Charlottesville two years ago to open their season and even though this is a much improved Virginia squad, the Tribe are looking like the team to beat in the CAA and could very well pull another shocker against the Cavs.  Toledo is well, Toledo, so I'll give UNH a fair chance in this one to make some noise againse what is probably one of the weakest FBS teams of this group.  Temple has improved greatly in the past few years, and a large crowd at the Linc in Philly should make this one intense between the fans.  I have a hunch that Temple wins this, but wouldn't be shocked if the Wildcats pulled off the upset.  UNC may have had their best players suspended last year, but they were still a great team.  I really don't see the Dukes pulling this off to start the year.

Now to the toughest matchup of them all: Delaware at Navy.  You're thinking, "Really, the so-called UD die-hard thinks the Hens can't pull this off?"  The truth is I do think they can win (I'll be there so I hope they do).  I just feel as if the offensive scheme at Navy with the triple-option is one of the most difficult to prepare for because it is so unique and something you may only see once in a season.  You need your fastest players to simulate what the defense will face and they still may not replicate what the team will see on the field. The Hens will need front seven to play the game of the year right off the bat and keep this one low scoring.  The downside is that if they can limit the run game of the Mids, and it becomes an aerial attack instead, the Delaware secondary is brand-spanking new and may struggle in it's first game.  All this just on the one side of the ball.  The Hens offense will be expected to keep up with Navy's all game long.  Not an easy task.

Last season, only Maryland, Georgia Southern, and Air Force held Navy to less than 15 points (1-2 in those games).  Navy's highlight win featured 76 points against East Carolina.  Their only other loss was to Duke, 34-31, where the Blue Devils barely held on to what had been a 24-point lead.  I don't see the Hens winning a shootout, but if they can hold the scores to a minimum, it could end up being a big win to start the season for the CAA.
