Men's Soccer off to Fast Start

Sophomore Midfielder
Roberto Gimenez
With all of the focus on American-style football, the Men's Soccer team has gotten off to a great start this season.  The goal of this year's team:  make it back to the CAA tournament.  This is the 85th season of Delaware Soccer and after one of the most successful seasons in team history, the team is looking to make history by becoming the first Blue Hens team to reach it's conference tournament in back-to-back seasons.

The Hens have a good core of star players returning to the lineup and will look for them to lead them back to the promise land.  One important factor that the preview article mentioned is that the CAA tournament has been expanded from four to six teams.  This should give the Hens much better odds at returning to the playoffs this season.

The first game for the Hens was back on August 26th, and it was a 3-0 victory over UMass at Delaware Mini-Stadium.  Frimpong put two home to get Delaware out in front, and Chas Wilson put home the 3rd of the game to give the Blue Hens their first victory of the season.  Brandon Paul gets the credit for the clean sheet.

The next match came on the road against Seton Hall on September 1st.  The Hens were forced to come from behind three times as they drew vs. the Pirates, 3-3.  Roberto Gimenez and Kyle Ellis scored the first two goals for the Hens, and with Delaware having gone down 3-2 in the 87th minute, Tobias Muller was able to put home a rebound off of a set piece and tie the game up in the 88th minute.  Overtime produced three yellow-red ejections (two for SHU, one for UD), but neither team could capitalize and the game ended in a draw.  The Pirates first goal of the game ended Brandon Paul's 426 minute shutout streak.

The Hens went third game looking to keep the momentum going and they did not disappoint.  Last night, Delaware beat Canisius up in Buffalo by a score of 1-0.  Roberto Gimenez scored his second of the season, unassisted in the 36th minute, to give the Hens the lead and the team never looked back (but not for a lack of shots taken by Canisius).  It was Kris Devaux's turn between the pipes and he was the one to earn the clean sheet.

All of this early success should help the Hens when the CAA games begin.  In the regional rankings, they are ranked 9th, but there are 5 other CAA teams ahead of them. The Hens seem poised to make history and return to the conference tournament, but there is still a long road ahead of them.  You can't hate on these kids as they have tons of energy and enthusiasm and look like they can pull this off.  As long as they keep those awesome blue hoops kits going, I'll be pulling for them!

Seriously, if you know anyone involved with this team, I want to buy one of those jerseys.
